Dr. Reed is a Certified Industrial Hygienist with over seven years of industry experience that includes mining, construction, and manufacturing. He has taught public health courses in academia, as well as OSHA 10- and 30-hour trainings and supervisory leadership workshops. He holds a PhD in Environmental Health Sciences.

Dr. Reed has contributed to numerous research projects related to miner safety and health. These projects include the evaluation of alternative diesel fuels in underground mining, a study assessing the noise exposures of underground mine shaft-sinking workers, an evaluation of the effectiveness of earplug insertion training in surface mines, a validation of a direct-read respirable silica instrument, an evaluation of personal cooling methods, and an assessment of active-noise cancelling headsets during jackleg drilling tasks. He is a former Chair of the American Industrial Hygiene Association's Mining Working Group.
