High Level Training Clinic

MSHA Train the Trainer

This is a 3 day course in which candidates will be given required training to allow them to possible be approved, by MSHA, as an instructor. The training course covers a variety of subjects that is specific to 30 CFR Part 48. They will be required to stand in front of the group and give two presentations. One of their own choosing and the other one is a subject that is required.

High Level Training Course

With the application of competency based learning, the High Level Training course is designed to further increase the skillset of health and safety trainers in mining. Trainers often understand the goal of the training but might not be aware of why or even the extent in which the quality of their training can affect trainees. The High Level Training Course is designed to further explain active learning techniques, competency based learning, and deploying strategies for the English Language Learner.

Effective Mining Safety Training – Design, Implementation, and Evaluation

The Effective Mining Safety Training – Design, Implementation, and Evaluation Course is designed as a train-the-trainer course that highlights the use of adult and active learning methodologies along with emphasizing transfer of training. During this 4-hour course, trainers navigate through the Mine Safety Training Handbook in which activities are tailored to accommodate audiences through hands-on demonstration and practice.

Improving Emergency Self Escape of Underground Miners via Competencies, Experiential Learning and Virtual Reality Gaming

The purpose of this project is to develop and use a comprehensive emergency preparedness program for underground coal miners which includes a validated standardized set of core competencies for self-escape; an experiential hands-on competency-based emergency preparedness training curriculum which includes use of the serious game Harry’s Hard Choices; and exercise guidance, based on national Homeland Security exercise design and conduct standards, to test and improve miner resilience and support successful self-escape.

Harry's Hard Choices

With the expansion and diversification of the mining industry workforce, trainers have identified a growing need for new and more versatile training materials. Well-designed computer games can serve a valuable role in supplementing established best practices in workplace learning. Toward this end, we have developed MineSAFE, a new platform that is being used to create "serious games" for mine safety education. The objectives of this platform are three-fold: (1) to elicit critical thinking about mine safety practices through interactive and contextualized learning; (2) to allow customization of learning materials for specific audiences, mine methods, and sites, with a particular emphasis on workplace literacy; and (3) to empower trainers to evaluate user understanding and decision making through a suite of integrated evaluation tools.

Using the MineSAFE platform, we have developed a variety of game prototypes addressing specific needs in mine safety training. For example, Harryís Hard Choices is a "serious game" for mine emergency preparedness. Based on a paper exercise by NIOSH (Vaught, Hall, & Klein 2009), trainees role-play as a section foreman who must lead his crew to safety in the face of an unfolding mine disaster. Harry's Hard Choices covers many CFR Part 48 topics; it provides an exciting context for learning that involves fires, lethal gases, explosions, injuries, failed equipment, ground falls, and crew conflicts. An emergent storyline responds to players' choices, forcing them to carefully consider each decision. Game mechanics, such as rewards and penalties, promote replayability as players strive to improve their scores and get better outcomes. Additional games are being developed to address the teaching of fatalgrams, site inspections, and hazards recognition.
